Rust October Update Adds Livestock, Biofuel and New Loot Rooms

Rust adds farmable cows and sheep on October 2

Facepunch's October Rust update, published on Steam on October 2, 2026, introduces farmable cows and sheep to the survival game. New fences and animal gates let players build enclosed pens, while both livestock types produce dung that can support farming. Cows supply milk and beef, and sheep provide wool and mutton. The update is now part of Rust, with the official announcement available on the Facepunch website.

Livestock breeding uses genetics and animal needs

Rust's new livestock system includes genetics and needs, allowing players to breed animals toward higher-quality results. This gives farmers a longer-term reason to keep animals alive instead of treating them only as a source of meat or trade goods. Mature cows and sheep can also be sold at ranches for randomized resource offers, while wool can be traded through the same vendor.

A ranch sale can be rejected twice before the system imposes a 15-minute wait for another attempt. Milk can be processed into skimmed milk or cream: skimmed milk extends tea effects, while cream increases their strength. The update also adds shepherd's pies and beef pies as livestock-related cooking options.

Spoiled food becomes fuel through the biofuel generator

The patch adds a biofuel generator that converts spoiled food and other organic matter into low-grade fuel. The machine requires manual stirring every 30 minutes, and players can use indicators to know when maintenance is due. That gives spoiled meat and other wasted food a practical role in a base's fuel supply.

Smaller creatures and monument loot rooms expand the map

The update adds smaller creatures, including squirrels, rabbits, frogs, sea turtles, crabs and jellyfish, to suitable regions. Facepunch says smart NPC processing is intended to limit their performance impact, while the new animals are currently described as mostly environmental decoration. Additional loot rooms also appear across many monuments, following the earlier power plant loot-room design.

Livestock makes Rust's early progression less linear

For players choosing a server tonight, livestock creates a new base-management route alongside Rust's established combat and scavenging loops. Breeding, ranch sales and fuel production reward players who invest in infrastructure, while the 15-minute ranch cooldown makes careless trading less forgiving. Servers with active farming communities may feel meaningfully different from those focused almost entirely on raids and monument runs.
