Rust Adds Livestock, Milk, Wool and a Biofuel Generator
Rust adds cows and sheep with breedable genetics
Rust's October 1, 2026 patch adds cows and sheep to the island. Both animals produce dung and can be harvested for meat, bones and leather, while cows also provide milk and sheep provide wool. Players can breed livestock to pursue stronger genetics, although the system works differently from plant genetics. Browse Rust servers.
Stable vendors trade mature animals and sheep wool
Fully grown cows and sheep can be led to a Stable and sold to its vendor for a randomized resource offer based on the animal's gene quality. The vendor permits three offers for one animal, after which refusing another offer makes the vendor stop buying animals for 15 minutes. Sheep wool can also be exchanged with the same vendor, with rewards determined by the amount delivered and a maximum turn-in of 400 wool.
Milk takes four hours to become skimmed milk and cream
Cow milk can be consumed immediately or refrigerated for 4 hours before it can be skimmed into Skimmed Milk and Cream. Milk can be used in crafting and generally extends tea effects, while Cream increases their potency. The patch also adds animal gates and fences for containing livestock around player bases.
Biofuel Generator converts spoiled meat into low grade fuel
The new Biofuel Generator accepts raw or spoiled meat and converts organic matter into low grade fuel. Players must stir it by hand about every 30 minutes, although connected IO can signal when another stir is needed. The amount of fuel depends on the calorific value of the material placed inside, giving unwanted meat a new base utility.
Frogs, rabbits and sea life populate Rust's biomes
The update adds frogs, rabbits, squirrels, sea turtles, crabs and jellyfish as smaller world creatures. Their behavior is heavily budgeted to limit server and client performance costs, and they currently serve mostly as environmental detail. The patch also states that the new navigation system has received multithreading and optimization work, with performance at least doubled compared with the previous patch.
Livestock makes base space part of the resource loop
For players choosing a Rust server tonight, the update gives animal pens a direct role in progression: fences protect livestock, genetics affect Stable offers, and milk or wool can feed crafting and trading. That makes a farm setup more than decoration, but it also adds recurring work through animal care, wool collection and the Biofuel Generator's 30-minute stirring cycle.
