Bungie will bring vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns and raids back to all players
Vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns and raids will return in the coming months
Bungie says previously vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, locations and raids will become available to all players in the coming months. The studio has not released a complete list of returning content, and it must first update lighting, combat encounters and other systems so older material meets current Destiny 2 stability and gameplay standards. Bungie's official September 21, 2026 statement is available here.
The move reverses the direction implied by Destiny 2's final update. Bungie now describes Destiny as central to its future and says it still has more stories and worlds planned, although the studio has not announced a new game or confirmed a new Destiny project. Earlier this year, Bungie also laid off at least 290 employees.
Bungie leaders acknowledge lost player trust
Studio head Poria Torkan and head of product Josh Deane said Bungie had lost player trust, lost colleagues and stopped prioritizing its players properly. Their September 21 statement also acknowledged that players may not immediately accept the studio's promises, making the returning Destiny 2 content the first concrete step in its effort to rebuild the relationship.
The timing puts the restored content alongside a difficult period for Bungie. The studio's final Destiny 2 update did not create a lasting replacement for the game's ongoing role, while its Marathon reboot attracted fewer players than Bungie expected. Bungie says Destiny remains foundational despite those recent setbacks.
Marathon will expand beyond extraction-shooter limits
Bungie says Marathon needs to evolve as well as preserve the parts that already work. The studio plans broader changes beyond the genre restrictions it originally placed on the game, after acknowledging that its player count fell short of expectations.
A permanent player-versus-environment mode and a social space are scheduled for Marathon in December. Those additions move the game beyond its existing risk-heavy extraction matches, giving players activities that do not depend entirely on competitive runs where lost gear and failed escapes carry the main pressure.
What this means for players choosing a game tonight
Destiny 2 is the clearer near-term choice for players who want a larger amount of returning content, but the release timing remains only “in the coming months.” Marathon has a dated December expansion of its format, while Bungie's admission about player numbers makes its future more dependent on whether those changes broaden its audience.
